Dogwood Classes

The Dogwood Institute of Fine Woodworking is located on Mid Broadwell Road in Alpharetta, Georgia. The classes are quite intensive and hands on.  For a complete list of classes taught, go to Dogwood Institute.  Call (800) 533-2440 or (770) 751-9571 to schedule these classes or to tour the school.

My primary role is teaching in the school’s Foundations series.  This is a series of five 2-day courses covering basic woodworking technique.  Material charges apply to most courses. Check the Dogwood website for details.

 

Foundations I
This course focuses on wood and wood movement, safe use and tuning of necessary hand and power tool, milling wood four-square and sharpening
1.  Wood, Wood Products & Milling
2. Hand Tools in the Workshop
3.  Sharpening Techniques

LABS: Milling a piece of rough lumber four-square and practicing proper use of hand tools.   Sharpening flat backed cutting tools.

Foundations II
This course focuses on the joinery used in the construction of furniture. While machine cut joinery will be discussed and demonstrated extensively, hand tools will be used to layout and cut mortise and tenon joints and both through and half-blind dovetails

LABS: Participants will mill rough lumber; layout and hand cut mortise and tenon joints and both hand cut through and half-blind dovetails.

Foundations III

Foundations III focuses on the construction of a small project that will incorporate most of the elements in the furniture process of design, selection of wood, rough milling, final milling, cutting joinery, shaping, tapering, carving details, surface preparation and assembly.

LABS: Participants will use all the techniques studied to build a bench using hand tools to a great extent.
