MY VAUGHAN BRICK WALL

I need siblings and parents of Richard H. VAUGHN.

New Information:

William VAUGHN was in Washington Co., AL in 1816 according to the AL 1810-1819 Tax Lists index.  There was also a William VAUGHAN on the 1860 Washington Co., AL census, but I don't know if he was the same one.

John VAUGHN was on the 1830 Washington Co., AL census.

Facts About Richard:

  • Richard H. VAUGHAN, b abt 1811 in VA
  • Married Anna B. RAIN 27 Feb 1839 in Washington Co., AL. 
  • Occupation: Farmer
  • 1840: No Vaughan's listed in Washington Co., AL
  • 1848: Richard VAUGHAN, Land Patent: 10 Apr 1848, Washington Co., AL, St. Stephens Land Office, 40 acres
  • 1850 census: Richard was listed as Robert H. VAUGHN on the 1850 census of Washington Co., AL.
  • 1850 Slave Schedule, 14 slaves
  • 1860 census as R.H. VAUGHN
  • 1862: Richard VAUGHAN, Land Patents: 1 Mar 1862, Washington and Clarke Co., AL, 317.75 acres and 320 acres under the same document number
  • 1870 census: Anna VAUGHAN, Beat 1, Lewis Creek, was listed as head of household so Richard must have died between 1 Mar 1862 and 1870.
  • 1870 census: C. VAUGHAN, Beat 1, Lewis Creek.  Clifford was a son of Anna and Richard.

Richard and Anna's oldest son was:

  • Emmett Reeves VAUGHAN, b 10 Jun 1841. 
  • Military: Emmett was in the 32nd Alabama Infantry, Co. "A".   You can learn about the regiment's engagements at my Civil War page.  There was also a J. D. Vaughan and a William P. Vaughan in Co. A., but I don't know where they were from.
  • 1860: Justice of the Peace according to "History of Washington County", Vol. I."
  • Married 1) Clemmie MILLS 27 Nov 1866, Mobile Co., AL.
  • 11 Oct 1869: Issued tobacco dealer license in Washington Co.
  • Married 2) Mary Isham KEITH in Petersburg, VA 6 Apr 1870.
  • Mary was the daughter of Lewis Gordon KEITH and Eliza Maria SANXAY of Richmond/Petersburg?, VA. She was b 8 Jun 1843 in Richmond, VA and d 5 Mar 1913 in Dallas Co., AL.
  • 1870 census: Listed as selling wood and living with his mother Anna.
  • 3 Oct 1870: He and partner named Burges were issued business license as dealers in alcohol.
  • 15 Dec 1871: Issued license as whole liquor dealer in Washington Co.
  • 1879 - Death certificiate issued for infant daughter Clemmie Mills VAUGHAN.
  • 1880 Mobile City Directory: Living on Canal Street, working as a day watchman for the M&O Railroad.
  • 1880 Census: Listed as forman of stables and living in 8th Ward, Mobile.
  • 1883 Mobil City Directory: Not listed.
  • 3 Oct 1888: Ordained as minister of Red Bud Missionary Baptist Church, Red Bud, Washington Co.
  • 1894: Pastored Spring Bank Baptist Church
    Other churches pastored were in Baldwin Co.,
    Richton, Perry Co., MS, Walker Springs area of Clarke Co., AL, and Montgomery, AL.
  • Emmett died 30 Nov 1912, Montgomery Co., AL, buried at Oakwood Cem., Montgomery, Montgomery Co., AL near his brother Clifford P.  He was my great grandfather.
